Step-by-step instruction

Now you’re ready to try mantra meditation in these 7 easy steps

1. Take a seat

Find a calm, quiet place. Sitting with your back straight and erect helps to enhance your focus.

2. Notice your body

Be conscious and present. Contemplate that you are a spiritual being and the body and mind are a vehicle. Say to yourself “ I am not my body. I’m not my mind”

3. Feel your breath

Breathe deeply through your nose to help bring you to a calm, present state of mind.

4. Speak the mantra softly and just listen

This is the heart of mantra meditation. You should clearly hear each word you vibrate. (You can even chant along with the track of the maha-mantra below). 

5. Bring back your focus to the sound vibration when your mind wanders

Keep delicately bringing your mental focus back to the sound vibration. Do not be disturbed if your thoughts wander but just come back to the mantra.

6. Close with gratitude

Keep going with the mantra for as long as you want, but try initially to give yourself at least 5 minutes. Then, when you are ready to stop, take a few deep breaths, relax and offer gratitude to the divine for your experience.
